While browsing YouTube I stumbled upon this video that has gone pretty viral at this point with well over a million views between the many times its been uploaded. Basically it's a Father who saw a post his daughter put on her Facebook where she complains about having to do housework and being woken up early by her little brother. The Dad decides to print it out, read it and then SHOOT her laptop with a handgun. Did I mention he recorded the whole thing and put it on YouTube? Hey I wouldn't like my daughter complaining about me on the internet either but welcome to being a Dad cowboy. You're supposed to be the adult here. You have publicly embarrassed her in a way that I'm sure will hurt her on many levels both socially in school and mentally for years to come. Congrats Dad! -C

Sierra is SICK! No not in the good way either :-(
Tuesday morning I dropped Sierra off at daycare and the first thing she did was say "My belly hurts" and want to lie down on the couch. I covered her with a blanket kissed her and told our day care provider that if she wasn't feeling well to call me and I'd come get her.
Well 30 minutes later and halfway to work I get a call "Sierra has vomited twice already you need to come get her" so I hopped back on the subway and headed back in the oppisite direction. I walked in scooped her up and she seemed happy / fine. While trying to put her boots on BLARGHHHHHH all over my jeans, shirt, coat and backpack. Nice. So I clean her up and we head home and spend the rest of the day alternating between throwing up, sleeping and snuggling. Poor baby.
The worst part is all she wanted to do was sleep but every twenty minutes she was throwing up so she couldn't stay asleep. Vomiting herself awake. Eventually she was able to stay asleep long enough to actually get some rest thankfully. After a long nap she woke up and I tried giving her some Pedialyte and saltines but she couldn't hold it down.
I feel so awful - theres nothing I can do! Nothing worse than feeling helpless when your little one is feeling so terribly. Today Mama stayed home with her and from the texts / tweets I've been getting she doesn't seem to be doing much better. We called the doctor earlier so hopefully we hear back.
Wish Sierra luck in beating this stupid stomach bug! -Craig

Weekend in review.
Monday, February 6, 2012
We had a lovely weekend. It was over too quickly unfortunately but here's a little of what we did. What did you do?
We started our weekend a little early and went out Thursday evening for "First Thursdays", a night once a month when galleries have new show openings. We started the night out at the Aviary Gallery, a great little art gallery / boutique in Jamaica Plain right off of Centre St. The show was "Process Objects and Instrumentation", Homemade instruments and paintings by Jason Sanford. It was a really nice show and Sierra fell in love with a little painting of a cellphone.

After Aviay we headed over to Yes.Oui.Si, Boston's multi-sensory exhibition space. The opening there was named "The Salon" and featured an artist that I graduated with from MassArt, Kira Leigh - Congrats Kira! There were 5 other artists along with Kira and the show was awesome. If you live in the area make sure you see it before it comes down March 9. Sierra was very interested in this little circular painting.
After work on Friday we had planned to meet up with a great friend and artist named Toai and do First Fridays, same as First Thursdays but on Friday go figure. Unfortunately Sierra was not feeling up to it so Toai and I adventured out just the two of us. We went to The Harrison Ave Galleries which is virtually a strip mall full of galleries, vintage markets and cafes. It's awesome. So although it was a bummer Lauren and Sierra couldn't come with - it was nice seeing an old friend for a nice night of free wine, pretzels and art.
These "The Next One Will Be So Much Better" paintings by Joe Zane were by far my favorite pieces of the evening. So awesome:
Saturday morning we went to brunch with our good pals Liz (http://www.lizisfoodie.com) and Stephen at the Otherside Cafe. The Otherside is the best place to grab a bite in the city w/ vegan / meat-eater combos. Delicious for all involved! Stephan and Liz are both old co-workers of mine so it's great to catch up once in awhile as I don't see them as often anymore! Plus vegan ranchero breakfast is pretty awesome. You may also want to check out online culinary classes for tips on how to create your own vegan ranchero breakfast!
After visiting with mémé we headed to my parents, ate dinner and headed back to Boston where Sierra went quickly to sleep and Lauren and I had a few drinks to unwind and listened to Brand New and Taking Back Sunday like we were 16. All in all a pretty great day.
Top Picture: Us sitting in the car for 30 minutes outside my parents house because Sierra was napping and we didn't want to wake her hah.
Bottom Left: A piece of my parents house
Bottom Right: Sierra playing with her Valentine's Day Gift from Gramma & Papa <3
Sunday morning we woke up watched Newcastle United beat Aston Villa 2-1 and take 5th place in the Premier League (WHAT! I COULD WALK ON AIR RIGHT NOW) and then Lauren and Sierra headed to Nana & Pépé's while I stayed home to get some work done before we headed out to our friend's Andre & Liz's house in Newton for some Super Bowl action. (That was the best run on sentence I have ever written!)
By "Super Bowl Action" I mean tons of baby kisses...
Sierra loves Eila! You should too follow her Mom and Dads blog at http://husbandwifebaby.wordpress.com !!! ADORABLE.
Sierra decided the sour cream (vegan) and hummus was just for her? Needless to say we got to bring the hummus home after she stuck her entire fist into it... Whoops.
Here are the men watching the game...
And here are the girls 'watching' the game... Could we be any more stereotypical? Whoops.
I may add Liz actually does watch football I just caught her on an off moment. I may also add she is a New Yorker and wanted the Giants to win...
Her husband Andre? Not so much... this is him drowning his Super Bowl loss sorrows in beer, guacamole and twitter... Boo Giants!
Well that was our weekend. Hope you had as much fun as we did! xo -Craig

Sierra took this photo ^ (she's been obssessed w/ "take pick-churrs" lately.
After brunch we headed down to New Bedford to visit my grandmother who isn't feeling so hot. We figured a visit from her awesome grandson and awesome-er great grand daughter would cheer her up! I think it worked even though we did get the "Are you married yet? Please do the right thing for Jesus" speech - but that's OK she rules anyway. Her house is a treasure chest to any antiquer by the way. Check out her awesome kitchen (pics by Lauren of course that antique hound!).

Thursday Tunes #09 / "Maps" by The Front Bottoms
I can NOT get enough of this band. My pal Matt showed them to me a little bit ago and they have been in heavy rotation since. They are a two member indie outfit from New Jersey and have been around since 2006 (can't believe I slept on this so long!). Their whole album is amazing but this is the only one that has an official video so enjoy.

Famous Dads are normal dads!
Friday, January 27, 2012
Even famous footballers have normal "Dad Mornings". Saw these tweets from Joey Barton, captain of Queens Park Rangers Premier League football team and just figured I'd share! Now only if he'd come back to Newcastle...
Thursday Tunes #08 / "Glory" by Jay-Z feat. Blue Ivy Carter
So I know it's Friday but whatever I was busy yesterday so you get my "Thursday Tunes" today. So as you all know (unless you live under a rock) Jay-Z and Beyonce finally had their baby. She is named "Blue Ivy Carter" and has already broken a music record by being the youngest person to ever make it on the Billboard Charts (her cry is sampled into the beat!).
It's amazing to see someone as famous as Jay-Z speak so openly and intimately about his experiences as new father. He even has a line about the pain of a miscarriage they went through. The song is great and it's awesome to have a song that speaks positively about being a father flying around the airwaves right now... Some of my fav lyrics include:

"The most amazing feeling I feel,
Words can’t describe what I’m feeling for real
Baby, I paint the sky blue, My greatest creation was you"
"A younger, smarter, faster me"
"But you was made in Paris and mama woke up the next day and shot her album package. Last time the miscarriage was so tragic,
We was afraid you disappeared but nah baby, you magic"

"You're a child of destiny, You're the child of my destiny
You're my child with the child from destiny's child, That's a hell of recipe"

Balancing Work and Family
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
One of the reasons I haven’t been posting here as regularly is because I have had an exuberant amount of freelance work this month. As
some of you may know if you read my “Family Comes First: The Challenges of Being a Working Dad” post - I am a graphic designer. I have a full time job
where I have a boss, an ID badge and an HR department. I also work many
hours a month of freelance to try and bring a little extra income into the house.
Sometimes I have rather slow months where I’ll only have two or three short
gigs but other months I’ll be so busy that I sleep very little and am irritable
but we get to pay all of our bills on time and maybe even save some money towards
our vacation fund.
This month has been one of those good (yet tired) months.
When I have a month like this my work schedule looks something like:
Monday-Friday I work 9:30 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. at my real job and then am home by
around 7:00. I then start freelance work at around 8:00 P.M. and work until
midnight or later on average. My weekends are more sporadic with the hours but
I’d say at least 4-6 hours each day. With all these hours being worked it’s
hard to find the time to do much else.
Now I’m sure plenty of you other Dads and Moms do the same
whether it’s freelance work, crafting things for Etsy, working a second night
job or whatever it is you do to bring extra income to your family. I wanted to
write a little bit about how I (think I) make it work without neglecting being
a good Dad or a good partner.
Although you may not always have the time to spend the
entire day playing choo choo trains or going to the park with your child it’s
important to balance work and parenting in a way that is financially sustainable
and mentally healthy for both you and your child. The way I make it work is to
have a schedule. Now this doesn’t need to be down to the minute with alarms
going off on your iPhone but it’s important to have some sort of routine. If
you don’t it becomes very possible to get wrapped up in your work. Here are some
things that I do that help me balance in a way I feel works for everyone.
Monday thru Friday our whole family wakes up at around 6:30
A.M. It takes our troop one hour from wake up to pulling out of our driveway
and in that time each one of us has duties. I look forward to this morning time
as it is a great time for me to bond with Sierra as I won’t see her for nearly
12 hours after I drop her off at daycare. I am usually the one who gets
her dressed, brushes her teeth and make sure she eats breakfast. Now although
those seem like nothing it’s a nice routine that is just Daddy / Baby time
every morning. Mama does basically everything else including make everyone’s
lunches and makes sure Sierra has all her things she’ll need for the day at
daycare.
Next we bring Mama to work and then it’s just Sierra and I for
the 15 minute drive to daycare which although I’m driving can still be a
bonding experience. We talk, sing songs and just enjoy the last few minutes
before an extended time apart. Lastly is drop off at daycare. Although not the
happiest time it is still a moment to be cherished everyday as Sierra is
normally much more clingy and affectionate. She knows she won’t see her mom or
myself for many hours once I leave. It is met with lots of hugs, kisses and
even tears some times.
We have similar routines for after work. Like I said I put
in a good 4-5 hours every night during busy months so it’s very important to
take time every night to also spend with my family away from the computer
screen. Almost every night we eat dinner together. We sit at the table, eat a
home cooked meal and listen to music. We do all the normal things: the “how was your day” conversations, taking
turns making sure Sierra actually eats, etc. It’s a nice thirty minutes where
we just enjoy one another with no distractions.
Next we do the bed time routine where one of us gets Sierra
P.J.’d and then I read anywhere from 3 to 10 (if Sierra gets her way) books
while Mama and Sierra both snuggle up in the bed. Lastly is goodnight hugs and
kisses and I shut the door and start work right away. I get as much done as I can
as fast as I can so I can still spend a solid thirty minutes or more with
Lauren at the very end of the night (computerless) before we both pass out to
wake up and start the routine over again.
Although collectively that’s only a couple of hours (if I’m
lucky) a day during the work week we make the most of it. The weekend is a bit
more relaxed and enjoyable. We don’t have as rigid of a routine and my trick
here is to just do my work during Sierra’s nap and after she goes to bed for
the night.
I do my best to work as much as I can so I can provide for
my family but I also do my best not to let it get (too much) in the way of
truly being there and accessible at all times. If any of you have any tips or
tricks for balancing work and parenting I’d love to hear them!

Commuting = Blogging
Monday, January 23, 2012
Good
Morning Internet folk. It’s 8:45 A.M. and I am on the subway heading to work.
It seems the morning commute is the only time I have to read or write anymore!
The past month has been very busy to say the least so I apologize for the
week(s) long gap between postings. I will try to avoid that from now on!
(p.s. didn't have time to actually post this until 7 P.M. if that tells you how busy I am during the day! Not even enough time to hit "Publish")
(p.s. didn't have time to actually post this until 7 P.M. if that tells you how busy I am during the day! Not even enough time to hit "Publish")
Anyway
the past two months have been very exhausting but very fun as well. We have
visited and been visited by more friends and family than I can count. It’s been
awesome to see Sierra with her cousins, uncles, aunts and grandparents and just
watching everyone enjoy one another’s company. She is growing at record speeds
and learning new things even faster. She can talk in sentences now, has an
extensive vocabulary of words and phrases that include: “Barack Obama and Joe
Biden” when asked who the president and vice president are, “Party Time
Excellent” when asked what time it and “CREAM! Get the money!” whenever she A)
sees money or B) is having diaper cream applied to her bottom. She is also fond
of other words such as: “Poop”, “Stinky
toots!” and “Potty”, bathroom vocab is huge right now as we are in the process
of potty training! I can’t believe how fast everything is moving right now.
Well
it’s almost my stop so I’ll leave you with a few cute photos from the past
couple months and a promise to write an actual post in here sometime this week.
